International Steel Makes Bid for Bethlehem
Cleveland-based International Steel Group made a bid Monday for
Pennsylvania's struggling Bethlehem Steel Corporation. If it
goes through, the $1.5 billion deal would potentially double
ISG's size and make it the largest integrated producer of steel
in the country. Company officials say, however, that workers in
Cleveland would see little change. Finalization of the deal
remains several months away, as negotiations could last for
several weeks.
Higher Rates for Medina's Water Customers
City Council members in Medina point to growing water costs,
along with inflation, as the reason for Monday night's approval
of a 15 percent water rate increase. The average customer will
most likely see an increase of about $3.50 per month, beginning
with their March bills. According to City Engineer Patrick
Patton, the increase raises Medina's rate to 3 percent higher
than the state average, but keeps the city competitive with
rates in immediate surrounding areas, including the Rural Lorain
County Water Authority.
Election Official Reverses Decision to Quit
The head of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections told
employees on Friday that he was resigning, and he cleaned out
his desk. Monday, however, Thomas Jelepis reversed that decision
and tore up his letter of resignation. Jelepis says he
considered quitting because he is unhappy with the board's
evaluations of consultants hired to assist in the purchase of
electronic voting machines, expected to cost about $20 million.
Jelepis met privately with board members for nearly three hours
to discuss the matter before opening Monday night's monthly
meeting to the public.
Plane Skids Off Runway, No Injuries
Is it over yet? That's the question many Clevelanders are asking
after winter weather made yet another day of traveling
treacherous. Monday's blowing wind and drifting snow shut down
area freeways throughout greater Cleveland, and caused a plane
to skid off a runway, temporarily closing Hopkins International
Airport. None of the 50 passengers or crew were hurt in the
incident.
Hit-And-Run Critically Injures Browns Fan
A Mayfield Heights man is reported in
critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital after an
alleged hit-and-run near Heinz Field following Sunday's playoff
game. Twenty-five-year-old Matthew Scott was walking to his car
with a friend when he was struck and thrown into the air,
striking his head on a curb when he landed. Police say they are
searching for the driver of a PT Cruiser, who allegedly stopped
briefly and got out of the vehicle before driving away.
Three Amish Family Members Die in House Fire
Fire officials say spilled fuel caused a weekend blaze that
claimed the lives of three Amish family members in Geauga
County. According to reports, a lamp tipped over and spilled the
fuel near a woodburning stove, igniting the deadly flames.
Seventy-eight-year-old Mose Burkholder, his wife, 77-year-old
Lydia, and their 55-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, were
discovered huddled together in the living room, where the blaze
began. Firefighters say battling the flames was a challenge, as
there are no hydrants in the area.
Traffic Fatalities Up Last Year
Last year the number of traffic fatalities on Ohio roadways
increased to 971. That's 26 more than in 2001. The Ohio State
Highway Patrol says 377 of those were alcohol-related. Many of
the fatalities were drivers or passengers who were not wearing
seat belts, authorities say.
