Man Accused of Running High-Tech Gambling
Business
Authorities in Alliance found elaborate equipment in the home of
William Polverine during a raid New Year's Eve. They had
suspected him of running a gambling racket. Among the evidence
reportedly collected were high-tech surveillance cameras and
motion detectors, along with guns, cocaine and a couple of
motorcycles. Police say they believe the equipment allowed the
43-year-old Polverine to get rid of some of the evidence as they
approached.
Restaurant Manager Allegedly Spiked Coffee
Customers at a Painesville McDonald's reportedly got a little
something extra in their coffee cups. The store's manager,
37-year-old Sharon Offak, was allegedly spiking the refills with
liquid hand sanitizer. Employees who say they spotted Offak in
action reported her to police. Offak, who has worked at the
restaurant for 10 years, has been placed on administrative leave
while the complaint is investigated. There have been no reports
of any customers suffering serious injury from ingesting the
alcohol-based sanitizer.
Traffic Fatalities Up Last Year
Last year the number of traffic fatalities on Ohio roadways
increased to 971. That's 26 more than in 2001. The Ohio State
Highway Patrol says 377 of those were alcohol-related. Many of
the fatalities were drivers or passengers who were not wearing
seat belts, authorities say.
