Companies Call Off Theater Merger
An executive committee for the Great Lakes Theater Festival has called off a proposed merger with the Cleveland Play House. Although recently viewed by many as a done deal, insiders reportedly say the negotiations between the two theaters had stopped progressing, and had actually taken a step in reverse. Merger talks began as both companies hit financial hardships, but the two sides could not agree on leadership issues.

Pair Accused of Killing Convenience Store Owner
Two suspects have been arrested in the murder of 42-year-old Mahir Sammor, the Cleveland convenience store owner who was shot and killed outside his North Olmsted home last month. Police say the two men, who will remain unidentified until their court appearance, were attempting to rob Sammor when they shot him several times in the chest on November 28. Eight years ago Sammor's brother, Mustafa, was also shot and killed at the family-owned store on East 55th Street . The family says they now plan to sell the business.

Suspects Awaiting Trials Released Due to Jail Overcrowding
A fire marshal's order to reduce overcrowding in the Cuyahoga County Jail downtown has forced dozens of non-violent criminals back onto the street. Cleveland city officials say the fire marshal visited the facility in late September when the jail, which is built to hold 1,750 inmates, housed about 23-hundred instead. The Marshal gave jail administrators 30 days to reduce that number. Those charged with non-violent crimes, such as drug possession and petty theft, would normally be held in jail until their trials, but are instead being released on bond. Administrators say the jail population is currently 19-hundred inmates.
