St. Stanislaus priest found in fire died from gunshot wound

The Rev. William Gulas, 69, pastor of St. Stanislaus Church, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest on Saturday, the county coroner said. His death has been ruled a homicide.

"Father Gulas was very well liked in the community and he had a number of friends, so this is really a mystery," said Celeste Glasgow, the mayor's spokeswoman.

At a press conference Sunday called by Mayor Jane Campbell, police said they still are investigating a motive and do not have any suspects.

A preliminary investigation shows Gulas had been shot and suffered a blow to the top of his head before the fire, said Dr. Elizabeth Balraj, the Cuyahoga County coroner.

Gulas was found in a first-floor office, Assistant Fire Chief Edward Whatley said.

New runway opens at Hopkins

The new runway, the first major expansion of the airfield in more than 50 years, will officially open slightly under its $129 million budget. By Saturday, the 1.3-mile concrete strip is expected to be in full use, allowing about 10 more takeoffs and landings an hour.

Within two years, a new radar system and a 2,000-foot addition to the new runway will allow the airport to accommodate up to 120 takeoffs and landings per hour - 50 percent more than it can handle today.
