Community's Donations Save Skating Rink
Donations of nearly $2,000 from the community mean that ice
skaters in Chardon will have their outdoor rink again this
winter. City Council last month recommended the elimination of
the rink as a cost-cutting measure, but met with immediate
protest. City workers began Wednesday to construct the 40 foot
by 85 foot rink, which will be free for skaters to use
whenever weather permits. Officials are hoping that donations
will save another popular seasonal attraction, the summer
concert series on the square, which is currently slated as
another budget casualty.
New Leader for University Hospitals Named
University Hospitals Health System has hired a new leader.
Forty-seven-year-old Thomas F. Zenty III will take over the
reigns at the second-largest health system in the area
beginning March 1. He replaces Dr. Fred Rothstein, who has
been the acting chief executive since Farah Walters stepped
down in June, and will oversee the entire UH Health System.
Computer System Implemented to Check on
Elderly
A new computer system that will check on Cleveland's elderly
should be operational in the spring. According to the
department of aging Director Jane Fumich, the computer is
capable of placing about 1200 calls each day to any of the
city's 86,000 senior citizens who register for the program. At
an agreed-upon time, it will call a number repeatedly for 30
minutes, and if there is no answer, an alert is sent for
someone to reach a designated emergency contact. If that
person cannot reach the senior, police will be notified.
Officials are hoping the system will provide a more organized
approach to protecting seniors living on their own.
School Chief Suspended While Allegations
Probed
Officials from the Wellington School District say
Superintendent Sherry Buccieri has been placed on paid leave
pending an investigation into various allegations. Buccieri is
accused of using school property for private use, making phone
calls for her part-time job during school hours. Officials are
also investigating accusations that she forged the resignation
letter of a bus driver. The school board is expected to meet
today to discuss the hiring of an interim superintendent.
