Charities Suffer as Economic Slump Continues
The shrinking economy is hurting the
needy more and more. Workers at local charities say donations
this year are running below last year, a year that many point
to as one of the worst in years. Charities say they're going
to have a difficult time just meeting people's basic needs. As
typically happens during lapses in the economy, those in need
are growing needier. Help from the government shrinks and so
do donations. Experts are blaming slumping incomes and
concerns about war for the decrease.
Public Hearing on Proposed RTA Transit
Center
Officials from the Greater Cleveland Transit Authority have
announced their hopes to build a new transit center for
downtown RTA passengers. At a meeting scheduled for Monday
night, the public can look at and discuss a proposal for an
$18 million transit center at East 21st and Prospect, near
Cleveland State University. The plans reportedly include an
indoor waiting room that would be heated in the winter and
air-conditioned in the summer, a concession area and a police
mini-station. The open house will begin at 6:30 in Room 301 of
CSU's University Center, followed by a presentation by RTA and
a question-and-answer session.
New Study Released on Cell Phones and
Accidents
A recent study shows that cell phone use does not increase a
driver's chance of being involved in a fatal accident.
According to the "Cleveland Plain Dealer," the study
by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis shows drivers using
cell phones do not cause a significant increase in deaths due
to accidents. A study last year showed cell phones contributed
to 1.5 percent of reported accidents, while nearly 11 percent
were caused by drivers talking with other passengers, and
another 11 percent were due to the driver adjusting the radio.
Despite these findings, many states are considering laws
banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving.
