Amtrak to Reduce Cleveland Service
Officials from Amtrak have announced the company will reduce passenger service in the Cleveland area. Beginning next month, departures to Philadelphia at 9 a.m. and to Chicago at 8 p.m. will be cut, leaving just four departures from the area to New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Some speculate that long idle times by trains during trips and inconvenient arrival times led to a lack of passengers, which brought about the cuts.

More Cuts Possible for Richmond Heights Schools
Despite budget cuts of more than $100,000 already, officials for the Richmond Heights school district say they are being forced to consider further cuts. Several reductions, including scaling back bus service and adopting a "pay-to-play" program for sports and other activities, could go into effect if voters defeat a special-election tax increase in February. The increase would cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $211 in taxes each year. School officials say the cuts would be necessary to avoid a deficit in the 2003-2004 school year.

Gun Used in Priest's Murder Still Missing
Detectives continue to hunt for the gun used to kill St. Stanislaus priest Father William Gulas last week. Gulas died after being shot in the chest, and his body was discovered in a rectory blaze apparently started to cover the crime. Daniel Montgomery, who was training to become a Franciscan friar, has allegedly confessed to police that he murdered Gulas, but has not said where he stashed the weapon. Authorities remain at a loss as to exactly what may have pressured Montgomery, with a background as a peace activist, to commit the crime, although some speculate that it was his impending removal from the rectory. Memorial services for Father Gulas were to be held at St. Stanislaus throughout the day Thursday, with Bishop Anthony Pilla leading a funeral Mass Friday morning.
