Brecksville VA Hospital Will Remain Open until 2009

The Brecksville VA Hospital will remain open until at least 2009. The Veterans Affairs Department says they need to build an addition to the Wade Park Facility in University Circle before they can close the Brecksville building. The proposed $99-million, eight-story addition will take a year to plan and three years to build. The VA Department says they want to close the Brecksville center and others around the country in an effort to overhaul their healthcare system.

East Cleveland Announces More Layoffs

Financial woes continue to plague the city of East Cleveland. The mayor of that city says 16 police and firefighters will have to be cut in an effort to meet the payroll. The city needs $600 thousand to avoid a deficit by the end of the year. The layoffs are a first step in a short-range plan.

Lorain Ford Plant Loses 1200 Jobs

The closing of the Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain, and a transfer of certain operations at the Avon Lake plant, will mean a loss of 12 hundred local jobs. The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner are made at Avon Lake, but will be transferred to Kansas City next summer. The van assembly at Lorain will go to Avon Lake in January 2006. Ford also expects many Lorain workers to take advantage of retirement packages.

Scholarships for Hispanic Students at Tri-C

Cuyahoga Community College will hold a fundraiser next month in an effort to raise cash for scholarships for Hispanic students. The event will feature the Flamenco troupe Los Lunares, called "Spanish Rhythms for Scholarships." The event will be held in Tri-C's Metropolitan Campus Auditorium in downtown Cleveland. Some 70 percent of the Hispanic students enrolled at Tri-C applied for some form of financial aid this past year. To help meet the growing need for scholarship funds for Hispanics, the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation has established a Hispanic Endowment which will help provide more money to Hispanic students who need financial assistance to further their education at Tri-C.
