Cleveland Clinic Implants Aneurysm Sensor

The Cleveland Clinic is breaking new ground with a device which can monitor abdominal aortic aneurysms. It is done with a wireless sensor which is surgically implanted in a weak area of an artery wall. The device monitors blood flow to stop possible aneurysms from growing and rupturing. Presently less than 50 percent of those suffering from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms survive.

Cleveland Unhappy with Shabby Lakepark Conditions

Cleveland city officials are not happy with the condition of state parks in northeast Ohio. They're demanding the state improve maintenance at Euclid Beach, Edgewater and other parks, or give them to another agency like the Cleveland Metroparks. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says it spends most of the spring and summer playing catch-up. The state could be open to the idea of the Cleveland Metroparks taking over stewardship of those areas.

Cleveland Police Trim Overtime

The Cleveland Police Department is keeping a close eye on overtime costs. It's nearly $2 million below budget, or about 17 percent less than years past. But Finance Director Robert Baker says White House election year visits by the Democratic and Republican tickets could increase the overtime dramatically in the next few months. President Bush's recent visit cost the city $60 thousand in overtime, and the cost of Senator Kerry's visit is still being determined.

Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones To Address Democrats

Cleveland area Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones will speak about Ohio's economic problems in an opening night speech at the Democratic National Convention. The congresswoman will be part of a prime time lineup that includes former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and former Vice President Al Gore. The theme of the speech will be strengthening America through jobs.

Brook Park Man Dies In Iraq

Another Cleveland area soldier has died in Iraq. Sergeant Joseph Martin Garmback was killed in a mortar attack last week and his body was returned home on Tuesday. Garmback will be buried with full military honors. He joined the Army in hopes of becoming a paratrooper like his father. The 24-year-old Garmback was one of five soldiers killed in the attack in Samarra, about 70 miles from Baghdad.

Cleveland Development Fund Created

A $20 million development fund has been created for neighborhood projects in each of Cleveland's 21 wards. Mayor Jane Campbell and council President Frank Jackson say the money will go toward housing, shopping and other projects. The funding is linked to federal grants the city gave out in loans and will have to be repaid. The payments will help pay off new bonds for the development fund.

Defense Payroll Office Given More Work

Work from military payroll centers in Denver and Indianapolis will now be done at the Cleveland processing center. The move is now underway though the Cleveland center may also be at risk. The government is looking to save $3 billion by consolidating operations around the country. Work at the Cleveland center can be done at other locations. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service Office has a $65 million annual payroll. It also generates $200 million for the local economy. Governor Robert Taft is meeting with officials in Washington in hopes of keeping the Ohio operations intact.

Shelter Offer Free Makeovers

Barbers and hair stylists did makeovers on  the third annual Day of Beauty at Cleveland's Hitchcock Center for Women. Clothing and shoes were also provided to as many as 100 men, women and children who participated in the program. It's aimed at developing self-esteem to help those less fortunate help themselves toward a better life.

Angry Airport Cabbies Protest

Angry cab drivers left their posts at Cleveland Hopkins Airport to stage a protest over complaints about the way they are treated on the job. The cabbies double parked in front of City Hall and gathered in the Rotunda until a meeting was scheduled with airport Commissioner Fred Szabo. The drivers say they are harassed by police, and are often directed to out of the way locations where potential fares can't find them. They also complained about alleged unfair competition from shuttle services. Szabo agreed to meet with representatives for the drivers on a regular basis to help resolve the outstanding issues.
 

Kerry-Edwards Will Head To Ohio on July 7th

Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry and his new running mate John Edwards will make a campaign stop through Cleveland tomorrow. The rally will be held on Mall C, next to City Hall beginning at 10 a.m. Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell has announced her support.

American Eagle to add Jobs in Cleveland

American Eagle has announced job opportunities in the regional airline business. The airline will conduct interviews Thursday July 8th and Friday July 9th at the Holiday Inn, 4181 W. 150th St. near the Cleveland Hopkins airport. Those interested can attend and find out how their interests and talents may match the needs in Cleveland. Candidates may also apply online and can request an interview by going to the American Eagle Careers site at www. americaneaglecareers.com . Once candidates have submitted their online applications, American Eagle will follow up via e-mail with more details about interviews

New Broadway Project In Slavic Village

Leaders in Cleveland's Slavic Village area will use a $150-thousand federal grant to examine the possibility of reuniting North and South Broadway. That roadway was split into north and south lanes more than 40 years ago in anticipation of the Bedford Freeway project, which was never built. The plans could install safer walkways and improve traffic patterns, and would cost as much as $5 million. The neighborhood could also see a cafe or coffeehouse as part of that project.

Cleveland to Host Youth Summit for US Health and Human Services

The Administration for Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Cleveland as the host city for this year's National Youth Summit, being held July 22nd through July 24th. The summit is sponsored by the Family and Youth Services Bureau. Program highlights include general session speakers, skill-building workshops for youth who either have lots or little community-change experience and adults who want to strengthen their ability to engage youth as well as sessions on leadership training in communities and how youth can get on government advisory boards and internship programs

The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center celebrates a decade of being ranked as the nation's number one cardiac care center with the release today of U.S. News & World Report's 2004 "America's Best Hospitals" survey. With the new rankings, the Cleveland Clinic also continues its tradition of being recognized as one the nation's best overall hospitals. For 2004, the hospital is ranked number four. In addition, the new survey ranks 16 Cleveland Clinic specialty care areas among the nation's best, with ten of those areas ranked among the top ten in the United States.
