those suffering from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms
survive.
Cleveland
Unhappy with Shabby Lakepark Conditions
Cleveland city officials are not happy with the
condition of state parks in northeast Ohio. They're
demanding the state improve maintenance at Euclid Beach,
Edgewater and other parks, or give them to another
agency like the Cleveland Metroparks. The Ohio
Department of Natural Resources says it spends most of
the spring and summer playing catch-up. The state could
be open to the idea of the Cleveland Metroparks taking
over stewardship of those areas.

Finance Director Robert Baker says White House election

could increase the overtime dramatically in the next few
months. President Bush's recent visit cost the city $60
thousand in overtime, and the cost of Senator Kerry's
visit is still being determined.

neighborhood projects in each of Cleveland's 21 wards.
Mayor Jane Campbell and council President Frank Jackson
say the money will go toward housing, shopping and other
projects. The funding is linked to federal grants the
city gave out in loans and will have to be repaid. The
payments will help pay off new bonds for the development
fund.
Defense
Payroll Office Given More Work
Work from military payroll centers in Denver and
Indianapolis will now be done at the Cleveland

looking to save $3 billion by consolidating operations
around the country. Work at the Cleveland center can be
done at other locations. The Defense Finance and
Accounting Service Office has a $65 million annual
payroll. It also generates $200 million for the local
economy. Governor Robert Taft is meeting with officials

in front of City Hall and gathered in the Rotunda until
a meeting was scheduled with airport Commissioner Fred
Szabo. The drivers say they are harassed by police, and
are often directed to out of the way locations where
potential fares can't find them. They also complained
about alleged unfair competition from shuttle services.
Szabo agreed to meet with representatives for the
drivers on a regular basis to help resolve the

New Broadway Project In
Slavic Village
Leaders in Cleveland's Slavic Village area will use a
$150-thousand federal grant to examine the possibility
of reuniting North and South Broadway. That roadway was
split into north and south lanes more than 40 years ago
in anticipation of the Bedford Freeway project, which
was never built. The plans could install safer walkways
and improve traffic patterns, and would cost as much as
$5 million. The neighborhood could also see a cafe or
