Free Dental Exams for Children at Tri-C Metro Campus
CLEVELAND, Jan. 23 -- One of the best ways to protect teeth
from tooth decay is with periodic dental exams and daily hygiene
care. As
part of National Children's Dental Access Day, Cuyahoga Community
College's dental hygiene students, staff and dental volunteers from
the community will provide free dental screenings, on Saturday,
February 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Metropolitan Campus Dental
Hygiene Clinic Science and Technology Building at 2900 Community
College Avenue.
Activities for the day include an exam, fluorides, x-rays and
sealants if
necessary, individual instruction on tooth decay prevention and care
packages.
Give Kids a Smile is part of the National Children's Dental
Access Day
educational campaign to help prevent tooth decay through early,
on-going
prevention measures.
The event is free and open to the
public. Parents and legal guardians are
encouraged to bring children up to 17 years old and must be present
during the time of the session. To schedule an appointment, call the
Tri-C Dental
Hygiene Clinic at (216) 987-4411 or (216) 987-4413. Walk-in
appointments are limited.
Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases among
school-age children-5 times as common as asthma and 7 times as
common as hay fever in 5- to-17 year-olds. Children can fight tooth
decay with daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups.
Mary Lou Gerosky, program manager for Dental Hygiene/Dental
Assisting,
said, "This event provides our dental hygiene and dental assisting
students
the opportunity to teach children the importance of dental hygiene
at an early
age." Children will receive a toothbrush, goodie bag, and
information for future treatment. Sponsors for the event include the
American Dental Association, Ivocular Sealants, and Proctor and
Gamble.
Participants and family members may schedule additional appointments
for
exams, x-rays, and cleanings. The Dental Hygiene Clinic provides
affordable
dental care throughout the school year. The fee for adults is $10
and $6 for
children.
The Tri-C Dental Hygiene Clinic is an educational facility where
Dental
Hygiene students provide preventive care with close supervision by
clinical
faculty. Graduates of the two-year program receive an Associate of
Applied
Science in Dental Hygiene. The college also offers a 16-week Dental
Assisting Award.
Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College is Ohio's first
community
college and now the state's largest, serving 55,000 students each
year. More
than 700,000 county residents have come through Tri-C's doors. The
college offers two-year associate's degrees, certificate programs,
and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum
includes nearly 900 credit courses in 70 career and technical
programs and liberal arts. Courses are offered at three Cuyahoga
County campus locations, many off-campus sites, and via television
and the Internet.
