2004 Season Games Reviews

By Mark Riley

Suggs Record Breaking Night Not Enough

Lee Suggs shattered Jim Browns 45 year old carries per game record with 38 (for 143 yds.), but the Browns, victimized by error after error, fell to the Miami Dolphins 10-7. Suggs fumbled the ball 3 times, once at the Dolphins 2 yd line, ending a promising drive. The two teams combined for 6 turnovers and went scoreless for nearly 3 1/2 quarters after an early 7-7 tie.

Perhaps the ugliest "play" of the game, and clearly representative of these two teams seasons, began with QB Luke McCown ( 9/16 161yds. 1TD and 2 INTs) threw a pic to Arturo Freeman, who fumbled. Teammate Patrick Curtain picked up the ball and lateral to Sam Madison, who fumbled. The Browns Center, Melvin Fowler fell on the ball and the Browns netted a 26 yard gain. 3 Plays later, Phil Dawson actually clanked a Field Goal attempt off the TOP of the goal post, no good. I ask you gentle reader, what are the statistical chances of that happening??

There were flashes of excitement, as Luke McCown hit Dennis Northcutt with a 58 yard bomb for the only score the Browns could muster. It came in the 1st Quarter, as Luke was flushed from the pocket, rolled to his left, managed to get his hips around and hit a streaking Northcutt with a perfect pass off his back foot. Technically, McCown did everything wrong and still made the throw work. Is anyone else reminded of a kid throwing in his backyard?

William Green did not carry the ball and did not appear in the game. Interim Head Coach said the "Lee (Suggs) just was seeing holes, one left, one right, the more we gave it to him the more he was hitting creases. We thought we could win the game and we felt Lee would have to do it".

"If we hold on to the ball at Miami's 2 and we hit our field goal attempt, we're up 17-7 and its a whole different ballgame". Right Terry, IF...its been an entire season of IF's.

The Browns finish the season next Sunday in Houston against the Texans who are fighting to finish .500. This is a team on the rise, and playing well, witness a 21-0 humbling of a Jacksonville Jaguars team yesterday who were fighting for a playoff spot. At least the Browns will have the 2nd pick in the Draft, and can pick no lower than 4th.

They are also beginning to develop a short list of GM and Coaching candidates. On the GM side, New England's Scott Pioli, Baltimore's Phil Savage and Ozzie Newsome continue to be the hot prospects. All have ties to the Browns. As far as Head Coach, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz , former Giants Head man Jim Fassel, and if either resign or are fired, Seattle Head Coach Mike Holmgren and Tennessee's Jeff Fisher would certainly get strong consideration, being that both have been to Super Bowls, reportedly a big factor for owner Randy Lerner. It will be an interesting off season for the Browns.

Cleveland Browns Stadium--

Snow Chance

The Faithful Fans were there in the freezing cold, but the Browns could not cool down the red hot San Diego Chargers, and went down in defeat 21-0. It was, somehow, an appropriate end to a dismal home portion of the season, with only a trip to South Beach to play the Dolphins next Sunday night, and the first visit for the Browns to Houston, to play the vastly improving Texans on the last Sunday of the season. The Browns, 3-11, really NEED to lose the remaining games to maximize their Draft position, and they can move to #2 with a loss to the Fins.

This years feel good story, Drew Brees, lead the Chargers to 21 points in conditions that can only be described as Arctic, throwing just 6 passes, completing 4. One pass completion was to Kent State's own Antonio Gates who turned on the afterburners and raced 72 yards for his NFL record tying 12th TD by a Tight End in a single season. The other 2 TD's came on a pair of LaDanlian Tomlinson 1 yard runs. LT had 26 carries for 111yds. The Chargers amassed 257 total yards. It was the first time the Chargers had shut out an opponent since 1993.

Luke McGown improved slightly this week going 11/27 for 108 yards and only 1 pic. The interception was a biggie however, coming on the first play from scrimmage after the Browns had recovered a Charger fumble at the 5 yard line, setting the Browns Offense up first and goal. The errant pass was intended for TE Aaron Shea, but was thrown badly behind him and intercepted in the endzone by LB Donnie Abraham. The Chargers then marched 80 yards for their first of three scores.

Lee Suggs demonstrated an ability to run in the horrid conditions that William Green lacks, carrying the ball 21 times for 105 yards. Dennis Nothcutt and Antonio Bryant both made awesome efforts catching the ball all day, although Bryant did drop a sure TD as he raced across the goal line. A catch would have tied the game. Instead, the Browns had to settle for a Phil Dawson Field goal attempt, which predictably, sailed wide right in the stiff northern wind.

Interim Head Coach Terry Robiskie spent a sizable amount of time apologizing at his press conference, not only for the game, but for the entire season. "To all the Cleveland Browns fans around the world, I want to say that I am sorry about the season. It has been tough and a tough way to end the home season. Tough game, tough weather, but the fans....unbelievable. I was driving in and was afraid we'd have trouble getting 10 fans, but I look in the Dawg Pound and its full. I look behind me, behind the bench and there's a bunch of guys with no shirts on, cheering us on. Some players actually came into the Locke room in tears after the game. They told me "I am sick of losing like this". They are starting to get it....they are starting to understand Cleveland, and Browns Football, and what it means to these fans. Its what made me fall in love with this town. The team is learning to care about the Browns, Cleveland and the fans...especially the fans"

Since this is Monday there must be a major injury, so add DT Kenard Lang to the walking wounded. Lang suffered a sprained knee and will be evaluated today to determine his status. A likely trip to the injured reserve is in the offing.

We bid adieu to Cleveland Browns Stadium till August of 2005, when we will most certainly have a new General Manager, new Head Coach and a whole slew of new players, all of which, hopefully, will understand what Cleveland Browns Football means to this town and to the legions of fans all over the world, and will restore our once proud tradition.

"17 Yards and the Browns are Crushed"

Orchard Park, New York

17 Yards....17 YARDS!! That's all that Luke McCown and the Browns could muster against the Buffalo Bills. Not that it was entirely McCowns fault, the Offensive Line could not block my sons 8th Grade Team, the Defense couldn't tackle my 72 year old mother (credit my mom though, she's a pretty good tailback), and the "starry eyed" QB found himself looking at the sky more than at Wide Outs and Running Backs, as he was sacked 8 times, including the very first play of the game.

Three of the sacks came when McCown was in the shotgun, and he STILL had less than 2 seconds to try to find a receiver. It was easily the most pathetic display of "protection" I've ever seen.

Its never a good stat when a cornerback is the teams leading tackler and Robert Griffith is far and away the leader with 114 tackles. The next closest tackler is Andra Davis and he's been on the injured list for 3 games. Davis has 78 tackles.

Look at the statistics: William Green rushed for 5 yards on 11 carries, a syntilating 0.4 yards per carry. McCown threw 8/20 for 62 yards, but after the 75 yards in losses from sacks, the team netted a -13 yards passing. 5 turnovers (3 fumbles and 2 interceptions) added to the complete decimation of the Browns.

Mean while on the other side of the ledger, the Bills QB Drew Bledsoe (12/27 100yds. 1 TD) and Willis (I put my knee on backwards during the National Championship game against Ohio State) McGahee (27 carries for 105 yards and 2 TDs), shredded what is left of the Browns Defense for 37 points. The Browns have given up 140 points in 3 games. It doesn't get any easier as the surprising San Diego Chargers (10-3) come to Cleveland next week. The Chargers are an early 21 point favorite.

Adding insult to the Browns MANY injuries, Jeff Garcia is lost for the season with a tear to the medial crucate ligament of his left knee. The injury will not require surgery. Also lost was Jeff Faine, with a high ankle sprain. Faine will not play against San Diego. The Garcia injury brings to 16 the number of Browns on injured reserve, 9 of them starters. Orpheus Roye was also carted off after the game with a knee injury but his status is not known.

It seems to this writer/fan that if Browns fans REALLY want to send a message to the Browns hierarchy and players/coaches, we should NOT show up to the last home game. You want to get Randy Lerners attention that you are SICK of the play/commitment/dedication/effort? Don't go...leave your seat empty....watch the game at home if you have to punish yourself and your family. Send THAT message to the Browns...NOTHING gets the attention of owners faster.

If the season ended today, the Browns would own the 3rd pick of the Draft, right behind the Miami Dolphins. The Browns play the Fish in 2 weeks. I say lose...lose them all...get the best pick you can...it may be the best thing that happens to the Browns AND their loyal fans for this season.

Browns Lose to New England Patriots

NEW ENGLAND 42, CLEVELAND 15

FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES
December 6, 2004

CLEVELAND -- The Patriots needed a fast start to squash any thoughts Cleveland had of an upset. Bethel Johnson gave them one in 14 seconds.

Johnson returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, Corey Dillon rushed for 98 yards and two TDs before halftime, and Randall Gay returned a fumble 41 yards for a score as the Patriots cruised.

The Patriots (11-1), who have won five straight, showed no mercy.

Even with his team leading by 35 in the third quarter, Patriots coach Bill Belichick refused to call off his defense and continued to blitz rookie quarterback Luke McCown, who was making his first start. In one series, McCown was sacked three straight times.

"There's a reason why they are the Super Bowl champions," McCown said. "We have a long way to go before we're at that level."

The Browns lost their sixth straight just days after coach Butch Davis' sudden resignation. It was Terry Robiskie's first game as interim coach.

Tom Brady passed for 157 yards and a touchdown -- a 44-yarder to David Patten -- before taking a seat late in the third with the Patriots up five TDs. Dillon, who bruised his leg in the first half, carried just once in the second half and finished with 100 yards.

CLEVELAND BROWNS NAME TERRY ROBISKIE INTERIM HEAD COACH

The Cleveland Browns have named Terry Robiskie as Interim Head Coach, the club announced this afternoon. The 2004 campaign marked the fourth season for Robiskie with the Cleveland Browns organization. Robiskie served as wide receivers coach the first three seasons (2001-03) and this past January, Robiskie was promoted to offensive coordinator.

Robiskie assumes the duties as Interim Head Coach following the resignation of Head Coach Butch Davis earlier this morning. This post will mark the second situation for Robiskie as interim head coach during his coaching career, as Robiskie assumed the coaching duties for the Washington Redskins’ following the departure of Norv Turner from the Redskins staff in 2000. Robiskie posted a 1-2 record for the Redskins in the club’s final three regular season games.

Terry Robiskie

Interim Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator

Year with Browns: 4th

Year in NFL: 23rd

Terry Robiskie was named offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 9, 2004. Robiskie is in his fourth season with the Browns after serving the previous three seasons as wide receivers coach. The 2004 season will be his 23rd in the NFL, and his 22 years of NFL experience includes roles as a position coach, offensive coordinator and head coach.

In 2002 as receivers coach, the Browns and the N.Y. Jets were the NFL’s only teams to have three players with 5+ TD receptions, and the Browns were one of six teams to have five players with 37+ receptions (Buffalo, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Seattle). Wide receiver Quincy Morgan ranked 2nd in the NFL (James McKnight, Miami, 18.2) with 17.2 average yards per catch.

Prior to joining the Browns in 2001, Robiskie spent the previous seven years with the Washington Redskins and concluded the 2000 season as the Redskins head coach for the final three games of the regular season, following the departure of Norv Turner. Robiskie’s record as head coach was 1-2, including a 20-3 win over Arizona on Dec. 24.

Robiskie began the 2000 season as passing game coordinator in Washington, and helped the Redskins rank 5th in the NFC in total offense (337.3 yards per game) and passing (228.0 yards per game). He helped running back Stephen Davis total 1,318 yards and 11 touchdowns on 332 attempts, including five 100-yard outings.

He entered the coaching profession with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1982 as the assistant running backs coach, where he tutored Marcus Allen to two Pro Bowls and two 1,000-yard seasons. Robiskie was the assistant special teams coach for the Raiders from 1985-87, and he tutored the Raiders tight ends in 1988.

Robiskie was the Raiders offensive coordinator from 1989-93. In 1990, Oakland ranked 9th in the NFL with 126.8 yards rushing per game and QB Jay Schroeder ranked 6th in the NFL with a 90.8 QB rating. In 1992, the Raiders ranked 11th in the NFL with 112.1 yards rushing. In 1993, Oakland ranked 5th in the NFL in passing and 13th in total offense as Robiskie helped QB Jeff Hostetler pass for 3,242 yards and 14 TDs. Robiskie’s 12 years with the Raiders included seven playoff stints, four division titles and a victory over the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII.

Originally an eighth round selection by Oakland in the 1977 NFL Draft, Robiskie was a four-year letter winner and the 1976 SEC MVP as a senior at LSU. Robiskie spent five years in the NFL as a running back with the Raiders (1977-79) and the Miami Dolphins (1980-81), while playing for legendary coaches John Madden, Don Shula and Tom Flores.

Born Nov. 12, 1954, in New Orleans, Robiskie and his wife, Cynthia, have three sons: Brian, Andrew and Kyle.

Butch Davis Gone From Browns 11/30/04

Channel 3 Sports Anchor and voice of Cleveland Browns radio, Jim Donovan, announced this morning that Butch Davis has been fired as Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns. The report came at a break in the Today show broadcast on NBC.

Announcement as to an interim coach have not, as yet, been announced, but further word out of Berea and from team owner, Randy Lerner, will be forthcoming

Browns Score 48, Lose Anyway

Cincinnati--Paul Brown Stadium

The Browns scored 48 points and Kelly Holcomb threw a career best 5 touchdown passes (30/39, 413 yds.5 TD's and 2 Int.), but unfortunately, the stellar effort was wasted as the Browns lost 58-48. It was the highest combined score in a regulation game since 1966.

Holcolmb get sacked by bengals
        Holcomb buried by Bengals

Deltha O'Neal picked off a Holcomb pass and scampered 31 yds. for the score with less than 1:43 left to seal the Browns, and possibly, Butch Davis' fate. Bengals running back rushed for 202 yds. and 2 TD's, to compliment QB Carson Palmer's 22/29 passing 251 yd and 4 TD effort. It was Palmers most prolific day as a pro, even though he was guilty of 3 interceptions.

Browns TE Steve Heiden had his best day as a pro also, with 7 catches that resulted in 3 TD's. WR Antonio Bryant was spectacular as well, with 8 grabs for 131 yds. and 2 TD's. Still, the Browns slip to 3-8. The Browns surrender of 58 points matches the record set by the then Houston Oilers on December 9, 1990, and the combined effort of both teams 966 yds total offense ranks 2nd in NFL history.

The Browns may have lost yet another key player in LB Andra Davis (the teams leading tackler) as a member of the Bengals rolled up on his ankle during the 3rd quarter. There was no report from the Browns as to the severity of the injury, but Davis did not return.

One would have to surmise that Butch Davis' job is all but gone. Amid all the rumors circling around Berea this past week, the Coach even admitted that he could be gone as early as Monday (tomorrow) or be here for the next 10 years (Unlikely). If Butch IS let go, who takes over the team? Will a General Manager be brought in? Will Butch take the rumored offer from the University of Florida Gators? There are lots and lots of questions, and very, very few answers.

Next, the Browns face the World Champion New England Patriots, at what one can only hope, will be the "friendly" confines of Cleveland Browns Stadium, perhaps under the direction of a new, or retread, Head Coach. Regardless, the long suffering fans of the Cleveland Browns will show up, cheer hard, wish and dream, of what might have been, for yet another year.

Bomb of Season Destruction Dropped on Browns

Browns - New York Jets

Despite 6 first half sacks of backup QB Quincy Carter (11/20 116yds 1 TD and 1INT), and surrendering a measly 10 points, the Browns dropped a heartbreaker to the NY Jets 10-7. As the number of sacks would indicate, the Browns Defense played well enough to win, but the Offense could not put together many sustained drives, and the result is a paltry 7 points.

Mr. Reliable, Phil Dawson, pushed 2 field goals wide right, ending his consecutive streak at 27. Give the Browns those 6 missed points and they win. But despite Dawson's awful day he did not back down. "It was entirely my fault, I take responsibility, I'll get back it together and be there next time". When Dawson misses two its painful, when the Browns lose their 4th straight, its excruciating.

Coach Butch Davis, who certainly has to be wondering just where he'll be sleeping next year, told the team he was " Proud of the way they played, how hard they played. They did everything I asked them to do all week, they did more" What? Huh? Butch, they couldn't put a drive together, didn't execute and they DIDN'T WIN! How about going into the locker room and throwing a chair, or pushing over a table of after game treats and yelling at some people for a change? It seems evident that your "Aw Shucks" brand of coaching isn't getting through. Its true that injuries have decimated the Browns (Ryan Tucker (ACL) and Jeff Garcia (Shoulder) join the growing group of the walking wounded), but backups HAVE to step up, and this group is not.

Garcia (10/17 88yds.1TD) left with the injured shoulder in the second quarter and was replaced by Kelly Holcomb (4/10 32yds.) who didn't fare any better. The Browns (3-7) travel next to the "Natti" to face the rejuvenated Bengals next Sunday. You know the world is ready to spin off its axis when the Bengals are ahead of the Browns in the AFC North.

Butch Davis summed it up best. "Losing hurts. There's no question about it losing hurts your heart". It sure does, Butch, it sure does.....

Spit, a Fight, Smash mouth Football, and a Loss

Cleveland Browns Stadium---Browns Steelers

The 104th Game in the NFL's fiercest rivalry began with a war of words between William Green and Joey Porter, escalated into spitting, then a fight, and resulted in both players being ejected, BEFORE the game even started! One would think that this would fire up Browns players and Coaches, especially in their own house, but Big Ben Rothlisberger went to 7-0 as a starter and the Steelers pounded the Browns 24-10. And folks, it wasn't even that close.

Gerard Warrens' stupid statements early in the week about how he was "gonna go up Bens head" served well enough as bulletin board material, and inspired Rothlisberger and his mates to crush the Browns. Warren, for all of his comments, had one, yes, ONE tackle, for the ENTIRE game. Really earning that pay check eh, "Big Money"?

Rothlisberger wasn't spectacular (10/16 134yds.), but he had key runs totaling 41yds and keyed two Jerome Bettis' TD scampers. Bettis had 104yds rushing along with the 2 scores.

James Harrison, who filled in for Porter after the latter was ejected, stepped in and lead the team in tackles and had a sack of Jeff Garcia. Garcia was under siege all day, going 7/16 for just 110yds, 4 sacks, an interception and a fumble. But don't blame this one on Garcia. The Offensive line was a mockery, demonstrating a complete inability to stop the Steelers revived "Blitzburg" defense. The Steelers ran a crossing blitz package all day, and even with half time to adjust for it, the O-line (and more specifically Butch Davis) did not.

The Browns started spectacularly, with a 74 yd kick return to the Steeler 19. But instead of going for the jugular (as seemingly EVERY other team on the planet would) and throwing to the end zone, the Browns coaching staff calls for 2 runs (that resulted in losses) and an obvious pass on third down. Result? Another Phil Dawson field goal INSTEAD of a tempo setting, message sending TD. It was all down hill from there, and I for one am sick of it. This Coaching staff has NO killer instinct, and unfortunately the players see it too.

On 2 separate occasions Garcia had to call timeouts when the Browns were driving, either because the play was not signaled in quickly enough, or because the wrong personnel were on the field. These issues are not the purview of the QB. This is a COACHING problem, Butch, one to which YOU are responsible. Aside from Garcia's repeated comments dating back to preseason, now a number of other key players, including Terrell Smith and Daylon McCutcheon, are rightfully questioning this Coach and his decision making. Both players expressed profound concern with why things are the way they are, and the fact that the talent on the field is not being used correctly. Garcia was especially poignant when he remarked "You name it, we do it the wrong way".

Jeff Garcia

With the Browns dropping back to 4th in the AFC North and not showing ANY improvement since the playoff season of 2002, Butch Davis job MUST be in jeopardy, and if its not, it should be. Browns fans I spoke with are simply fed up with all the mediocrity, all of the excuses. They want a team that wins, NOW. It seems odd to them (and to this writer), that other teams have a bad season and then just reload ( Read: Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Seattle, Green Bay, et al), but the Browns languish in complete, total mediocrity, winning just enough to keep fans hungering, begging for more. Every season there's just a spark, a taste, a tease, and then the fans again get screwed.

Its time for some serious soul searching, not just by the players, but the Coaching staff and ownership. The fans of this fair city DESERVE better, and we have PAID and PAID and PAID our dues.

Browns Ravens

Baltimore, Md---

Once again, Jeff Garcia was valiant, determined and poised, but despite his near solo effort to win the game, the Ravens stole one from the Browns 27-13.

After guiding the Browns on a long drive with a scant 2:33 left on the clock, and perching them on the Ravens 5 with 25 seconds to play, a referee no-call on an absolute mugging of Aaron Shea in the end zone by Ray Lewis, prohibited a game tying TD and gave Ed Reed just enough room to grab the ball and scamper a record setting 106 yds. for a TD at the other end of the field. Once again, the Browns are victimized at the end of a game, another they shoulda/coulda won. The Seal Brown and Orange slip into a 3-5 tie with the Bungles, who managed a win over the struggling Dallas Cowboys.

The Ravens debuted all black uni's designed by LB Ray Lewis. Someone should let Ray know that he is definitely NOT a designer. The Ravens looked like they were in dancers tights or at very best, the snipers of the VC during the Vietnam conflict. The Browns countered with the all white uni's, so thank God for the orange helmets or people all over the country would've thought that it was a broadcast from the sixties, in black and white.

Richard Alston DID start the game with a bang, scoring on a 93 yd kick return on the games first play. Alston had been cut, regulated to the practice squad, sold cars for awhile and was signed early in the week and scored his first NFL touchdown.

Asked if the play on Shea by Lewis in the endzone was interference, Coach Butch Davis simply replied "Yep". "Everybody saw it", echoed André Davis. "Everyone knows it was pass interference on the last play. We didn't get the call and we lost". Garcia and Shea both signaled for the call as soon as the ball whizzed by, but the ref said nothing to either man.

In other bad news, Kelvin Garmon was lost for the season with torn ligaments on both sides of his right knee. WR Andre Davis also was lost with a toe injury and Leigh Bodden injured his shoulder and left the locker room in a sling.

The Browns handled Jamaal Lewis pretty well, holding him to just 81 yds on 22 attempts. The Browns totaled just 91 yds. rushing and 146 yds. passing. A sizable chunk of both totals came on the last gasp drive at the end of the game.

Jeff Garcia continues to impress as a tough, no-nonsense, blue-collar QB with a real drive to win, and it appears as if that attitude may be starting to rub off on his team mates. One can only hope it happens SOON, as the 7-1 Steelers come to town Sunday.

Browns Eagles

The Browns definitely deserved better, but came up just short to the Philadelphia Eagles 34-31 in OT at Cleveland Browns Stadium. David Akers nailed a 50 yd. Field goal with just over 5 minutes remaining in the overtime session and the Eagles flew home still undefeated.

Donovan McNabb threw for 376 yds. and 4 touchdowns, 2 of which went to loudmouth Terrell Owens. Owens nemesis, Browns QB Jeff Garcia. (21-32 236 yds. 1 TD) ran for the score that tied the game with 30 seconds left in regulation and forced OT. So truly, Garcia equaled Owens in every aspect of the game.

The Browns matched the Eagles punch for punch in this bout, doing it primarily on the ground, while the Eagles, not surprisingly made most of their efforts via the air. Lee Suggs( 15 rushes for 78yds. 1 TD) and William Green (14 rushes for 64 yds. 1 TD) gave the Browns a "dice em, slice em" running attack, behind the stellar blocking of FB Terrell Smith. When Smith was out of the game, the Browns were predictable and stale, with him in, they were a machine.

Mr. Dependable, aka Phil Dawson, kicked a 38 yd FG in the Second Quarter, his 24th straight, which set a new franchise record. Way to go Phil!

The Browns head into the bye week 3-4 and face the Ravens in 2 weeks at Baltimore. The week off should help get Antonio Bryant up to speed as well as get the injuries to the Browns healed. After the Baltimore game, the Browns return home to Cleveland Browns Stadium where they play the Steelers. So truly, the Browns can make or break their season with the upcoming 2 games.

The Browns certainly can hold their collective heads high after this one, loss or not. The NFL brought the best it had and the Browns battled them toe to toe. For this young and learning team, there is no shame here.

Browns Trade Morgan

The Browns announced today that they've traded WR Quincy Morgan to Dallas for WR Antonio Bryant. Bryant's stats are significantly better than Q who consistently complained about not getting the ball enough. This should open things up for Denis Northcutt who deserves playing time and deserves to start.

Morgan and Riley discuss the trade

Bengals Johnson Gets a Taste of His Own Medicine

Cleveland Browns Stadium ---

Bengals Wide Out Chad Johnson should take a big swallow of the pink medicine he sent to the Browns Defensive backfield this week, as the Browns pummeled he and the rest of the hapless Cincinnati Bungles(1-4), 34-17.

Truly, the game should not have even been that close, but 4 Browns turnovers kept the Bengals in the game and even produced a late 2nd quarter lead at 17-14. Prior to the 17 unanswered point the Bengals posted, the Browns (3-3) looked to be invincible as they initially scored on a NFL record tying 99 yd TD pass from Jeff Garcia (16/23 310yds. 4 TD 2 INT) to Andre Davis, and then on a 10 play 56 yd.drive capped by a 10 yd Garcia to Quincy Morgan TD pass.

Quincy Morgan

The 99yd TD was the longest in Browns history, and the longest since Bernie Kosar hit Webstar Slaughter on a 92 yarder in 1989.

Garcia spread the ball around, hitting 9 different receivers, including a pair of beautiful touch passes, first to Aaron Shea on a 5yd TD pass and then to Lee Suggs on a perfect 59 yd pass for a TD.

Mr. Reliable, Phil Dawson, connected on all 3 field goals he attempted to extend his personal best kicking streak to 23 in a row. He also knocked three kick offs into the end zone for touchbacks, something he hasn't done all year.

The Browns Defense held Carson Palmer to just 148 yds on 36 attempts. Rudi Johnson was also held in check with just 57 yds on 16 carries. The afore mentioned Johnson, mailer of the Pepto-Bismol, had a pathetic day, dropping 2 key third down passes that snuffed out Cinci drives.

Overall, it was a big win for the Browns, keeping them in the hunt, but even more, it was a big relief.

Next up, the Browns entertain McNabb, Owens and the rest of the undefeated Eagles at home where the Browns continue to be undefeated, so something HAS to give.

Garcia Valiant in Defeat

Pittsburgh, PA

Browns QB Jeff Garcia did everything he could do, but it wasn't enough to push the Browns past the Steelers, who handled the Browns 34-23. Believe me, the game wasn't even that close.

Garcia under Pressure

The games first quarter was pretty exciting, the Browns matching the Steelers shot for shot. After that, however, the wheels came off for the Browns, with the Steelers Ben Roethlisberger (16/21 231yds.1 TD 1 INT) doing a fair imitation of Terry Bradshaw, and pacing the Black and Gold to 13 points. Result? A 27-13 halftime lead.

Once again haunted by a near total inability to finish drives with touchdowns, the Browns only TD until late in the game came on Chris Crockers 25 yd. interception return of a rare Roethlisberger miscue. Thank the football gods for Phil Dawson who once again was as dependable as the sunrise, hitting 3/3 field goals and 2/2 extra points.

William Green had 3 attempts for 27 yds and Lee Suggs 11 for 30 yds, but the Browns leading rusher was, wait for it, Jeff Garcia (16/34 210yds. 1 TD), with 41 yds on 5 attempts. In almost every case, Garcia was simply running for his life. The Offensive line was pathetic, barely allowing Garcia enough time to set up in the pocket, let alone look for receivers.

Steelers Swam William Green

On a side note, I am sick of radio and TV personalities and callers complaining about Jeff Garcia. It is painfully obvious to me that Garcia is one of the few members of this team that cares one wit about not just competing, but winning. The man is full of fire, can't stand it when players don't make the extra effort to make a catch or first down. You can see it in his eyes on TV, this QB wants to win. Its high time that the rest of the team quit talking and start doing.

Steelers RB Duce Staley ran for over 100 yds for his 3rd consecutive game and "Big Ben" Roethlisberger is now 3-0 for Pittsburgh. Um, Tommy Maddox? You've played your last game for the Steelers. Maybe that insurance sales position is still available...

The Browns have a date with the dangerous Bengals next week. At least it is in the friendly confines of Cleveland Browns Stadium, where the Browns are undefeated this season, going all the way back to the Pre-Season.
