Browns Hammer Steelers
By Mark Riley
Pittsburgh, Pa---Arriving at the seemingly
impenetrable fortress that is Heinz Field, the
Cleveland Browns, lead by a focused and determined Tim
Couch, found a chink in the armor of the Steelers and
repeatedly stabbed at it, decimating Pittsburgh,
33-13.
The Browns came in to the game reeling after a painful
loss to the Bengals, and did what few thought they
could do: Shutting down the Steelers powerful offense
to just 221 yds, exploiting the #2 rushing defense in
the NFL with 127 yds. and above all, winning in Heinz
field where they haven't won since the Chris Palmer
era, 6 meetings ago.
Tim Couch, subbing for the still gimpy Kelly Holcomb,
was nails, throwing 20/25 for 208 yds. and 2 TD's.
Couch went 17/18 in the first half throwing the 2 TD's
and rushing for a 3rd. The rushing TD was the first of
the season for the Browns and Couch emphasized the
point with an authoritive spike of the ball in the
endzone. It was the 6th road win in a row for Couch.

Asked if the game was the finest of Couch's career,
Coach Butch Davis said "That's a pretty accurate
statement". Davis also noted that the fans and the
media "don't realize how hard these guys worked to win
this game". Of particular note was the performance of
the Offensive Line, who, despite being together only
this week of practice, worked like a finely tuned
machine, keeping Couch clean and protected so he could
make several reads, and opening holes for William
Green, who had a career high 33 carries for 115 yds.
On Defense, the Browns were spectacular, frustrating,
hurrying and sacking Tommy Maddox all night, including
2 interceptions, one returned 75 yds. for a TD by
Daylon McCutcheon, that truly broke the back of the
Steelers as they were mounting a offensive surge.
Contrasting Green's huge rushing night, the entire
Steeler team only managed 60 total yds. Both Courtney
Brown and Gerard Warren had big a night, with Brown
strip sacking Maddox and recovering the fumble in the
first quarter, resulting in a Phil Dawson Field Goal
and a 10-0 lead. The high flying duo of Hines Ward and
Plaxico Burress were held to just 3 receptions.
The special teams had a few problems with lane
protection and pursuit angles, allowing the Steelers
to run back punts and kicks extensively far into
Browns territory. Dennis Northcutt bobbled a punt that
was recovered by Pittsburgh, but later, Andre Davis
made of for the gaffe with a 61 yd. kickoff return,
setting up a 9 yd. toss to KJ for a TD.
Maddox, slouched in his locker, mentioned, "It was a
rough night for all of us, they outplayed us in every
area".
It was refreshing to see that despite having a large
lead, the Browns did NOT retreat to the "prevent
defense" (which only prevents a win) that they
employed in the playoff loss last year to these same
Steelers. They remained resolute, attacking the
Steelers and pounding the ball on offense too.
Next up, the geriatric Oakland Raiders, who were
beaten yesterday by the hapless Chicago Bears. The
only problem is, that the game is at Cleveland
Stadium, where the Browns can't seem to muster a win.
