Browns Strike Gold out West By Mark Riley
San Francisco----Kelly Holcomb battled a first
quarter injury and the Offensive line figured out how
to neutralize the 49ers constant blitz, allowing the
Browns to finally win one in a thriller 13-12.

Holcomb injured his right ankle early in the first
quarter and limped the rest of the game, but was able
to escape the relentless attack of the 49ers pass rush
often enough to throw two Touchdown strikes, both to
Andre Davis, the latter coming with just 29 seconds
left in the game. The drive was reminiscent of a
"Drive" many years ago( remember Elway?) as Holcomb
dinked and dunked the Browns 91yds. in 17 plays for
the score. Holcomb even dropped a snap and then hit
Kevin Johnson with a bullet to keep the drive alive at
the Niners 26.
"What can you say?" a rhetorical Butch Davis asked.
"Heroic, gutty. Kelly just kept getting off the mat
and answering the bell. Its the mark of a champion."
Just one week after allowing an NFL record 295 yards
rushing to Baltimore's Jamal Lewis, the Browns kept
the potent Niners offense out of the end zone. In the
first quarter a goaline stand spearheaded by MLB Andra
Davis rebuffed the 49ers. Fred Beasley carried twice
from inside the one yard line, but Davis, along with
Orpheus Roye and Kevin Bentley, blasted through and
caught Beasley in mid air and drove him back just
enough to prevent the TD. "Our defensive pride was
wounded last week", said Butch Davis. "They were angry
and they wanted to have a hell of a performance
today". They did. San Francisco was limited to four
field goals by newly acquired Owen Pochman.

The 49ers self proclaimed "All World" wide receiver
Terrell Owens was held to 8 catches and just 90 yards,
while 3 time All Pro QB Jeff Garcia was 21/35 for 198
yds. 1 pick and no TD's. Garrison Hearst was held to
18 yards on 9 carries.

Meanwhile on the other side of the ball, Kevin Johnson
had 11 catches for 109 yds., Kelly Holcomb went 25/38
for 222 yds. and 2 TD's. William Green rushed for 47
yds. on 15 carries.
In other games, the Ravens continued on their winning
ways with a 24-10 pasting of the Chargers and the
Steelers got back on track with a 17-10 victory over
the vastly improving Bengals, whom the Browns play at
Cleveland Browns Stadium next Sunday. The AFC North
gets tighter and the interdivision games mean even
more now.
"Winning gives you a huge shot of confidence" said
Butch Davis. The Browns have plenty to smile about on
the 2200 mile trip home.
