Cleveland Cleveland Ohio is the home to more than 400,000 people and is in the most populated regions in Ohio. Northeastern Ohio, of which Cleveland is the central city makes up one third of the economy in the state of Ohio. The Cleveland Region is the 31st largest economy in the world. The Cleveland Region is made of 18 counties and includes, Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Lorain, and Parma. Cleveland was founded in 1796 as part of the Connecticut western Reserve. The city quickly grew in the 1820's as the Ohio Erie Canal allowed farmers and factories to distribute their products to the rest of the world. The Ohio Erie Canal helped establish the Cleveland Region during the industrial revolution. The Cleveland Region today is a leader in the manufacturing, steel, rubber, polymers, nanotechnology, paint, aluminum, and medical industries. The largest employer in Cleveland is the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic employs more than 40,000 people in the Cleveland Region. Other employers in the Cleveland Region include, University Hospitals, Key Bank, National City Bank, Sherwin Williams Paint, Walmart, Bank of America, Intuit, Rockwell Automation, Little Tikes, Progressive Insurance, Diebold, Hoover, Goodyear, Timken, Smuckers, American Greetings, Yellow, Steris, MTD, Parker Hannifin, Eaton, Bonnie Bell, Ford, General Motors, Daimler Chrysler, IMG, Jones Day, Dirt Devil, Kirby, and others. Cleveland enjoys major league sports teams in the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cleveland Indians. The Universities in Cleveland include: Cleveland State University, Case, University of Akron, Kent State, Oberlin, Notre Dame of Ohio, Baldwin Wallace, and John Carol.
