Cleveland was founded in 1796 as part of the Connecticut western Reserve. The city quickly grew in the 1820's as the Ohio Erie Canal allowed farmers and factories to distribute their products to the rest of the world.

The Ohio Erie Canal helped establish the Cleveland Region during the industrial revolution. The Cleveland Region today is a leader in the manufacturing, steel, rubber, polymers, nanotechnology, paint, aluminum, and medical industries.

The largest employer in Cleveland is the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic employs more than 40,000 people in the Cleveland Region.
